Delhi High Court dismisses PIL seeking Bharat Ratna for Ratan Tata

New Delhi, March 31 : The Delhi High Court on Thursday refused to entertain a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking direction to the Central Government to award Bharat Ratan to industrialist Ratan Tata. Coming down heavily on the ptitionr, a Bench comprising Delhi High Court acting Chief Justice Vipin Sanghi and Justice Vipin Chawla said, “Is this for the court to direct the government to award Bharat Ratan to a person? What kind of a petition is this?” The Bench warned the petitioner that it would level costs on him, if he does not withdraw the plea. After hearing this, the Counsel for the petitioner requested the court for withdrawing the petition. The plea had contended before the Court that Ratan Tata has an unblemished life and deserves to be awarded Bharat Ratna, as he is serving the nation. The Counsel further submitted that Ratan has led an exemplary life, inspiring millions around the globe and has proved to be an excellent leader. The Central Government should be directed to award Bharat Ratna to industrialist Ratan Tata, he added in the plea. XC RJ
