Couple arrested for trying to sell 8-months old baby

Udaipur : The city police has arrested a couple accused of trying to sell an eight-month old baby girl in one of the Dharamshala under Surajpole police station limits on Tuesday. Mohd Subhan so Mohd Hanif and his wife Shagufta alias Veena were residents of Chimanpura mohalla in Udaipur were caught while they were trying to sell a baby for 6 lakh rupees to prospective buyers. In order to win people’s sympathy the woman claimed that it was her sister’s baby and they were unable to look after her and hence they were giving her away.

While in custody, the couple told the police that the baby was given to them by an unknown woman in Ajmer who wasnt capable to look after the child. The couple are in police remand and have been taken to Ajmer to verify their claim about the baby’s mother. Police suspect the child has been stolen from somewhere.

The matter came to light when one Naushad resident of Payada called the police and informed that a suspicious looking couple were trying to sell off a baby girl for 6 lakh rupees. Naushad and his friend kept the couple engaged in conversation by the time police arrived and thus saved the baby from their clutches. SHO RamSumer said Veena hails from the Valmiki community and she is older to her husband. Their respective families have disowned them and hence the couple roamed around several places. For past two months, they had been in Ajmer and allegedly picked up the child from somewhere. A case has been registered and the Child Welfare Committee ordered the baby to be sent to the state shelter home.
