The smoke from the resulting fires hangs at the horizon like a fog.About 73,000 fires have been detected by Brazil’s space research center. It’s a record number — and an 85% increase compared to last year.
Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron has said the record number of fires in the Amazon rainforest is an “international crisis” that needs to be on the top of the agenda at the G7 summit.
He tweeted “Our house is burning. Literally.”UN chief Antonio Guterres also said he was “deeply concerned” by the fires.Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro earlier said his government lacked the resources to fight the surge in fires in the world’s biggest rainforest.
Conservationists however have blamed Bolsonaro’s government for the Amazon’s plight, saying that he has encouraged loggers and farmers to clear the land.
