Boris Johnson takes charge as UK Prime Minister

Arriving at the Buckingham Palace shortly after his predecessor Theresa May, Johnson was appointed as the new Prime Minister by the Queen. In his first address as PM on the steps of 10 Downing street, Johnson said the buck stops here.

Theresa May arrived at the Buckingham Palace as the Prime Minister for one last time, to formally submit her resignation to the Queen accompanied by her husband, Philip. Bidding farewell to 10 Downing street, an emotional May said that it was the greatest honour of her life to serve as the Prime Minister of UK.

Expressing gratitude, May thanked everyone for putting their faith in her. To serve as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom is the greatest honour. The heavy responsibilities are outweighed by the huge potential to serve your country. But you achieve nothing alone. And as I leave Downing Street, my final words are of sincere thanks to my colleagues in government and parliament, to everyone.

The day of the outgoing Prime Minister began bidding adieu to the Parliament. In her last speech as the Prime Minister she made it clear that Boris Johnson has her full support, and wished her successor all the best. “I look forward on the back benches to giving my full support to the next prime minister as he takes us forward, delivering on Brexit and continuing to deliver on those Conservative policies.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Boris Johnson on assuming office as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. PM Modi wished him success and said he is looking forward to working with him to further strengthen India – UK partnership in all spheres.
