At least 19 dead in Surat coaching centre fire

In Gujarat, at least 19 children died and 16 others injured in a major fire that broke out in a building in Sarthana area of Surat on Friday.

The fire broke out in the Smart design Studio where children taking drawing and art classes. It was situated on the third to top floor of 3 storied Takshshila Arcade.

Fire Brigade sources said that they received call at around 4 pm and fire was controlled in around 2 hours.

Injured children have been admitted in Municipal and other nearby hospitals. Chief Minister Vijay Rupani also rushed to the spot on Friday night to overview the rescue and treatment of injured children.

He ordered high level inquiry in the incident. Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel said that action would be taken against whoever found guilty for violation of norms after the detailed probe.

Meanwhile local authorities have ordered to close all the tuition classes in Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Rajkot and other cities of the state till detailed checking of the fire safety.

State Government has announced Rs. 4 lakh cash assistance to the families of each victim.

According to the eye witnesses, following the fire spread on the stairs, many students started jumping from the third floor of the complex.

There were 16 girl students among the total death. According to some survivors, there was no way out for students to escape from the spot.

Local Authorities in Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Rajkot and other cities have ordered the closer of all the education institutions till the full fire safety measures implemented.
