Liverpool have won the European Cup or Champions League five times, most recently in 2005.
They have twice been finalists since then – beaten in 2007 by AC Milan and last year by Real Madrid.
In contrast this is Spurs’ first ever final of the premier European club competition.
And they have not won any trophy for the past 11 years, with their most recent silverware the 2008 League Cup.
After their respective first legs, fewer fans would have given them any chance.
But in two successive nights of miraculous football, both Liverpool and Tottenham overcame first-leg deficits, and seemingly insurmountable odds to reach the final in Madrid on Saturday night.
As both of the teams showed in their semifinal second legs, this final means everything for their seasons.
