Acid laden tanker topples over van, 9 including 4 children killed

   

Udaipur : Birthday celebration turned into a tragedy for two familes who met horrifying death in a road mishap at Charbhuja-Desuri mega state highway  near Punjab mod (turn) in Rajsamand district on Friday afternoon. Nine persons including two women and four children were killed when an acid laden tanker toppled over the Eeco car they were travelling.

They all were burnt as the acid seeped inside the car. The deceased were members of two families who were close friends and had gone for an outing to celebrate one of the child’s birthday. All were residents of Shahpura in Bhilwara district. Eight of them died on spot while one of the child was declared dead in the hospital, police said. The accident triggered panic among the commuters as the acid spilled on the road. The accident happened around 12 pm however, the rescue operation could begin some two hours later when the fire fighters from Rajsamand arrived and showered water in the area to eliminate the effect of acid spread all over the road.

People watched helplessly the horrifying site of victims who had been badly crushed after being caught under the massive tanker. A motorcyclist who happened to pass at the same time, had a narrow escape as he managed to slip while his bike also got crushed beneath the vehicles.. Police teams from Charbhuja, Kelwa and adjoining stations of Pali district too rushed on the spot and helped in the salvaging task. It took hours to clear the jam at both ends after the tanker was lifted away with  the help of earth moving equipments.

“The deceased were identified as Mukesh (40) son of Ramgopal Agarwal, his wife Mamta (35) their sons Yash (10) and Darshit (7) and Mamta’s nephew Jayant (18) son of Mahaveer Agarwal. The second family was of Pankaj (38) son of Nirmal Jain, his wife Sangeeta (36) and their daughters Ananya (15) and Anandana (10)” SHO Charbhuja Bharat Singh told Udaipur Kiran. The families had set off in the morning from Bhilwara for an outing as it was Yash’s birthday and they had planned to visit Ranakpur and Charbhuja temple, sources said. 

Rajsamand Collector Arvind Poswal and additional SP Rajesh Gupta went to the spot. The bodies are expected to be taken to Shahpura by late night after completion of all formalities. The local traders association had announced a half day closure as a tribute to the departed souls.
