16 killed in Surat fire; PM asks state govt to provide all assistance

At least 16 persons were killed and several others injured when a major fire broke out at a commercial complex in Surat. The fire broke out on the second floor of Takshshila apartment, where a number of students were attending private tuition classes.

About 17 teams of fire fighters rushed to the spot to control the fire and conduct rescue works. The injured were rushed to the hospitals.

Meanwhile, State government has ordered the inquiry of the incident.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed grief at the fire tragedy in Surat. In a tweet, he said his thoughts are with the bereaved families and hoped that the injured recover quickly. The Prime Minister asked the Gujarat government and local authorities to provide all possible assistance to those affected.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh also expressed anguish over the incident. The Home Minister tweeted – Deeply saddened by the loss of precious lives due to fire in Surat. My thoughts are with the families of the deceased. I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured.

Union Health Minister J P Nadda has assured Gujarat government of all possible help in view of fire incident. He has asked the Director AIIMS New Delhi to be ready with all necessary arrangements. A team of burn  trauma doctors has been constituted and they have been put on alert. Nadda spoke to State Chief Minister Vijay Rupani following the incident.
