Villagers chop off leopard’s head, legs who took away goat to feed cubs

Udaipur : A five year old female leopard fell prey to mob fury on Tuesday near Nagawra in Arthuna panchayat of Banswara district when she took away a goat from one of the huts located in scattered settlements here. The leopard had two cubs which are about 1.5 months old and the mother had sneaked into the locality to find food for her babies. Villagers encircled the mute animal, pelted stones, hit with sticks and even chopped off her head, legs and tore off her nails. The cubs are missing after the incident and an intense search has been laid to rescue them, authorities said.

The incident took place around 6 am when the beast crept near one of the huts located nearby a nullah and dragged away a goat tied outside. The house owner chased the animal who hid behind the rock with her prey. The man tried to frighten her away but the animal growled back. He called out other villagers who gathered around the area in large number. They chased her when the panthress ran helter skelter to save herself. “ It is indeed an unfortunate incident. Instead of reporting us, the villagers took law in their hands and killed the animal brutally. They pelted stones, hit her with sticks. They chopped off her head and legs with swords, there are bruises all over her body” Divisional Forest Officer A.S. Gothwal told Udaipur Kiran.

The forest department found the body parts of the feline from different places. The police and administrative authorities too arrived at the spot. The nails were missing from the body which was later sent to Banswara district headquarters. “ The medical board will conduct postmortem on Wednesday. The cubs are missing and our team is searching them at all possible places so that they do not fall prey to predators. If they are found, they would be sent to a biological park for upkeep” Gothwal said. A case has been registered under various sections of the wildlife act against unidentified persons.
