Udaipur : Tension prevailed for some hours on Tuesday morning in Kanpur village, some five kilometers from Udaipur city, when cops exercised slight force to disperse villagers , fearing violence. The crowd had gathered and blocked the traffic movement here to protest against an incident of fire in the early morning, at the house of one of the sarpanch candidate who had lost the election recently. According to the villagers, the house had been put on fire by Hemraj Gameti, the newly elected sarpanch and his men as they feared the prospect of recounting here.

The newly build house of Gehrilal Dangi, the former ward panch from Kanpur gram panchayat was charred on wee hours of Tuesday. “ Some 300 people of the area had gathered at my home the previous night to decide over a meeting with the returning officer on Tuesday morning and demand recounting” said Gehrilal Dangi. Dangi ‘s son Thawarchand who contested for the sarpanch post had bagged 1180 votes while his opponent Hemraj Gameti won with a thin margin of 30 votes after results announced   on Sunday. Gehrilal’s supporters demanded a recounting and they had proposed to meet the returning officer on Tuesday.

After the late night meeting, everyone has gone back to their homes. However, around 4 in the morning villagers were shocked to see Gehrilal’s house in flames. Fortunately the family had not shifted in the newly constructed house and resided nearby at their paternal home. However, few valuables and a motorcycle which were inside the building were damaged, Dangi said. On Tuesday morning, many villagers had blocked the road to protest the incident. Villagers suspected Gameti behind the fire. However, the cops who went to hold the situation feared violence and applied slight force to disperse the crowd further leading to a tensed situation in the area. Police assured the villagers of a fair probe in the episode to catch the culprit.
