Excise dept to keep tab on New Year cocktail parties

Udaipur : Hosting cocktail parties on New Year eve without permission could land anyone in trouble. The state excise department has appealed to people to get temporary or occasional license before organizing parties where liquor is to be served. Those failing to comply with the rules may not only face penalties but also spot arrest as the department has decided to increase patrolling and sudden raids in venues where celebrations would be held. This includes not only hotels and resorts but celebrations at farm houses and even individual homes. Having liquor stock beyond the permissible limit is an offense under the Excise Act.

As per rules, if anyone wish to serve liquor for his guests on special occasions, he has to obtain license for the same from the department, however, this rule is generally overlooked by the public. The stringent provision not only contribute to revenue collection but also lays check on the uncontrolled consumption of liquor on special occasions which further may lead to untoward incidents, accidents and crimes by boozers. As per rules, the applicant who applies for the occasional license has to mention not only the celebration venue but also the number of guests expected and amount of liquor to be consumed during the event.

In Udaipur, more than 200 occasional licenses have been issued to people in past few days, for cocktail parties from December 25 onwards. Generally, people throw parties for friends and relatives on new year eve. Many hotels in Udaipur which do not have the bar license, also host parties for in house guests and even allowing outsiders. However, many times, liquor is served in these gatherings which is illegal as there are provisions in the excise rules for procuring temporary license even for a day if cocktail parties are to be organized. “ Those who desire to host cocktail parties must procure a temporary license which can be easily attained by submitting an application with requisite fees at the excise office” said Mohanlal Gupta, the district excise officer. For the commercial parties attracting entry fees from the guests, the fees for grant of temporary license is 10 thousand rupees per day while its 2 thousand rupees for domestic parties. The excise teams would be patrolling in the city and surrounding areas on the new year eve to keep a tab.
