Udaipur : The residents of Basti colony in Chitrakoot Nagar on Monday staged a protest against the cremation and funeral of a Jain Muni in the residential colony. This is the second occasion when a saint of the sect was cremated in residential area thus sparking anger among the other communities who claimed the act as violation of land use rules. However, after intervention of Home Minister Gulab chand Kataria the funeral was conducted amid tight police security.
The funeral procession of Ganesh Muni who had expired after Santhara a day ago was held on Monday morning. As the people came to know that the last rites would be held in a plot owned by Jain community in the residential area, men marched to the collectorate to mark their protest. They met SP Rajendra Prasad Goyal to express their discontentment. Sensing the gravity of situation a phone call to the Home Minister was made and Kataria told the men that since the funeral was being held on the community land, no one could interfere.
However, the residents claimed that the plot was allotted for community purpose and not for burial ground and since even commercial activities is not permitted in the area, hence even cremation shouldn’t be allowed. Despite the protest, the cremation was held at the scheduled land. Large police force was deployed in the area with the ADM city OP Bunkar himself present to ensure law and order during the entire ceremony.
