Admin to follow ‘Amul pattern’ to scale vegetable production

Udaipur : The district administration is all set to follow the famous ‘AMUL’ pattern to increase vegetable production in Udaipur under the Harit Dhara project. A federation of farmers is soon to be constituted at the district level which will collaborate in production, processing and marketing of the produce. AMUL (Anand Milk Union Ltd) has established itself as a uniquely appropriate model for rural development through cooperative federation that have not just been instrumental in economic development of the village society but it also provided vital ingredient for improving health & nutritional requirement.

“The federation will be a network of some 20 thousand cultivators who would be encouraged to cultivate vegetables under the ongoing Harit Dhara project. Earlier five thousand farmers were benefitted under the project who were provided agri-inputs like seed, fertilizers etc to take up vegetable production’ informed Collector Ashutosh A.T Pednekar. The encouraging feedback from the farmers to have earned profits from their crops lead to the idea of framing a federation on co-operative pattern and the success of AMUL model was analyzed. “ Various schemes of the agriculture and horticulture departments would be clubbed to incorporate and benefit more farmers through the federation” the officer said. The federation will work on the 3-tier Amul model having selected farmers from the panchayat, block and district levels. All member cultivators would receive identity cards, will be informed about various beneficiary schemes and facilities, training, field demonstrations, crop insurance, market demand, price etc through group messaging technology. The administration will also assist the farmers to find a market for their produce by introducing them to wholesale buyers such as Reliance, Bharti etc. “ Beside setting up veggie counters at ration shops, we will arrange the produce to be supplied the police line and central jail mess, govt schools for the mid-day meal etc where bulk purchase is required on regular basis” Ashutosh said. The federation is likely to be formed by February 10 and start functioning.
